Metabolic Health
Finding out about our metabolic health, learning how to become metabolically flexible, and allowing our body to burn fat and not just store it, is incredibly freeing and transformational and will lead to improved energy levels, less cravings and reduced risk of disease. I believe that the choices we make in our 40s and 50s will directly impact our health and mobility when we are in our 70s, 80s and beyond. Therefore, as we enter our 40s and 50s, it's essential we obtain a solid and accurate understanding of our metabolic health.

Metabolic Health and Insulin
Insulin is a hugely important hormone that shouldn't just be of interest to diabetics: The basis of our metabolic health stems from how sensitive or resistent our bodies are to insulin. Insulin resistance is the major factor in metabolic syndrome which is a constellation of symptoms linked to the major conditions that western medicine spends most of its time fighting - heart disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, dementia and various cancers. Also,
interestingly, as women enter into their perimenopause and menopause years, their degree of insulin resistance will directly affect how well they go through these life stages. Therefore addressing your insulin resistance and metabolic health is important.
The important thing to recognise about insulin resistance is that it exists as a spectrum: It isn’t that we either have it or we don’t, we are all somewhere on this spectrum. At one end we are completely sensitive to insulin and at the other end we have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and along the way many of us might be pre-diabetic or even pre-pre diabetic. Understanding where you are on this spectrum and how to go about improving your metabolic health is transformational and is where I come in.
The Good News
The good news is that insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome is completely reversible - not by medication - but by making the dietary and lifestyle changes that will work for you as an individual.
Current Medicine
However, current routine health checks miss early signs of metabolic disease and only detect it once it's established. Therefore, many of us are told we are healthy until we have advanced symptoms. All is well until you show ‘end stage’ symptoms and disease has already started to set in, that is when current medicine acts.

My Approach: Holistic and Personalised
I will help you determine where you are in the spectrum of metabolic health by looking at any blood test results you may already have from your doctor or assisting you to get some testing done. Waist to hip measurements and recent blood pressure readings will also be required.
I interpret the results for you using functional medicine parameters rather than the standard medical parameters. Standard parameters are based on average results and we know that the average person is not necessarily healthy. In contrast, functional medicine parameters aim to prevent diseases forever by looking at optimal parameters.
I will then help you understand the results in the context of your life: your diet, exercise, work, relationships, sleep and stress. I will offer personalised dietary and life style solutions to ensure that any indications of disease are reversed.
